Consuming instead of Creating

A substitute action in four steps

01

The situation

Pinterest board: 412 pins. Are.na channel: 87 blocks. Personal work produced this month: none. Yet the feeling of being "deep in a project right now" is remarkably present.

02

Why it is tempting

Consumption is warm. It provides a sense of belonging without the need for assessment. Looking at someone else's work replaces, for a moment, the vulnerability of showing your own.

03

What it replaces

The first poor sketch. The post that no one will like. The risk of finding out you aren't as good as you feel while scrolling.

04

The next concrete step

Close the browser. Set a 25-minute timer. Create a version so bad that it can only improve from there—and do not delete it.

Substitute actions are human. Noticing them is not a verdict — it is an invitation to try the smallest real action.
