Remembering is not the same as contact
When looking at old photos and messages replaces sending a real text or meeting someone in the present.

A substitute action in four steps
The situation
You look at old photos, reread old messages, and reminisce about shared times, feeling a sense of connection. While pleasant, it remains a contact without a present reality.
Why it is tempting
Remembering is safe. It requires no reaction, carries no risk of rejection, and creates a warm feeling of connection without the need to show up in the current moment.
What it replaces
A real message, a phone call, or a meeting. Contact in the present is riskier because you don't know how the other person will react. It requires presence and the willingness to be seen.
The next concrete step
Send a short message: "I was thinking of you today. How are you doing?"
Substitute actions are human. Noticing them is not a verdict — it is an invitation to try the smallest real action.
