Planning instead of Deciding

Perfect preparation as a flight from decision-making

When setting up Notion becomes more important than the project it was built for.

A substitute action in four steps

01

The situation

Three Notion templates compared, one of them customized, then switched to Linear just to try it out. A week later, a perfectly configured workspace exists, yet not a single completed task within it that isn't about the setup itself.

02

Why it is tempting

Tools promise control without risk. As long as we are busy with preparation, we don't have to make decisions that could later be proven wrong. A new system feels like a fresh start—without the discomfort of actually starting.

03

What it replaces

The uncomfortable first decision. The unfinished draft. The conversation where it becomes clear that you don't know the direction yet, but have to take it anyway.

04

The next concrete step

Use the simplest, worst tool available—pen, paper, a single email—to make the first real decision and communicate it to someone who expects an answer.

Substitute actions are human. Noticing them is not a verdict — it is an invitation to try the smallest real action.
