Politics and Participation

Sharing is not yet participation

When visibility in the timeline replaces a concrete action outside of it.

A substitute action in four steps

01

The situation

One shares posts, likes statements, comments on debates, and publicly demonstrates where they stand. This can be important because visibility can amplify political issues. But visibility is not automatically participation.

02

Why it is tempting

Sharing is simple and immediate. It creates a sense of engagement without the need to expose or change oneself. The algorithm reinforces the feeling of impact, even when nothing happens outside the timeline.

03

What it replaces

A concrete action outside of your own timeline. For example, an inquiry, a conversation, a local initiative, a membership, a donation, a voting decision, or practical support.

04

The next concrete step

Find an organization, initiative, or person working practically on the issue and support them concretely once.

Substitute actions are human. Noticing them is not a verdict — it is an invitation to try the smallest real action.
