Theory is controllable. It has answers, steps, and degrees of mastery. You can perfect it without a single person listening. As long as you are practicing, you are still becoming—and no one can claim the result should already be there.
What it replaces
The first uncertain note in a real room with other musicians. The risk of sounding exactly how you actually sound in front of an audience or bandmates: incomplete, searching, sometimes empty. The realization that improvisation is not just practicing at a higher volume.
